TED Talk: The Magic Ingredient that Brings Pixar Movies to Life

If there’s one movie studio that has my heart it’s Pixar. I was lucky enough to visit their HQ back in August 2011 when story artist Josh Cooley invited me up for an interview. Ever since I saw Toy Story I’ve been a fan of Pixar not just because of their groundbreaking animation work or their captivating storytelling but because of how they run their company. (For more on that read Creativity Inc.)

Back in November, Danielle Feinberg, Pixar’s director of photography, gave an inspiring TED talk called The Magic Ingredient that Brings Pixar Movies to Life. In it, she talks about how Pixar uses math, science and code to create magical worlds. Mostly, it was inspiring to hear about how she, personally, found her true calling. I love people with passion!

Meticulously Hand Drawn Illustrations of Butterflies

I’ve been wavering between getting one of these beautiful butterfly prints by artist Rafael Araujo or buying his new coloring book instead. (I’ll probably end up doing both.) At first glance, I thought these were made on a computer using software like Adobe Illustrator. I was surprised to find out that Araujo creates these illustrations entirely by hand, using a pencil, a compass, a contractor and some paint. Each piece can take up to 100 hours to create!

The Venezuelan artist has been called the “undisputed master of golden-ratio art” whereby he draws the Fibonacci spiral, a geometric curlicue based upon a sequence of integers which describes the way things tend to grow in the natural world. Watch the video on the Golden Ratio Coloring Book Kickstarter page for more info.

I’m in love with his butterfly series, particularly the Blue Morpho, Double Helix piece, which can be bought on the Colossal Shop. Here’s its description.

Where most of us simply see a butterfly fluttering in the breeze, artist Rafael Araujo sees an intricate mathematical framework governing the subtle motions of flight. Created as part of the artist’s Calculations series, an ongoing examination of the complexity of life, Blue Morpho, Double Helix teams Araujo’s unique vision of the natural world with vivid color and precise lines.

Charming Tiny Pottery for Plants by Hinkleville

I came across this adorable pottery by Janet Hinkle of Hinkleville by way of Etsy’s Intagram. Each tiny piece, which measures two-inches-tall and wide) is handmade in Toronto. They’re are made for people who don’t want to put their sweet succulents in ordinary pots. Instead, one can put them in these mini planters that have closed eyes painted on them. The Star recently called Hinkleville one of the Etsy artisans to watch at the One of a Kind Show, a marketplace that brings together makers and buyers. Adorable, right? I want to scoop them up!

Love Print by Max Wanger

I just scooped up this “lovely” print by Max Wanger. I’ve been following the LA-based photographer for awhile now, his Instagram is filled with delicious visual goodness. I particularly love the way he makes his subjects appear small against an enormous background, it’s his trademark style.

While looking over A Cup of Jo, I spotted the “Love” piece in the post about Joanna’s sister’s home makeover. After a quick search I found it on One Kings Lane for 52% off! (I chose the large 40″ by 28″ size print.) It comes framed in white, which is perfect for my house since all of my art is framed in that color.

When he was just seven years old, Max constructed his first camera out of just paper and scotch tape. As you can see, he is fond of simplicity, negative space, to less is more, and to the beauty in the unexpected. (Isn’t that balloon shot just perfection?) Max’s photographs have been exhibited all over the world. He currently resides in LA with his wife and business partner, Margaux, and their son, Dash.

I’m also eyeing this Hawaii beach scene print.

Beautiful Muses by Conrad Roset

Whether he’s working with ink, watercolor or colored pencil, artist Conrad Roset knows how to make the female figure come alive. On his website, the Barcelona-based artist has a whole collection of work under the title “Muses”. You’ll find seductive pieces under this personal collection. “I search the beauty the body exudes, I like drawing the female figure,” he states. I can’t get enough of his work and neither can the fans who’ve tattooed some of his pieces onto their skin.

Precise Stencils of People in Vulnerable Poses by Jana & JS

Until March 19, my favorite art gallery, Thinkspace in Culver City, is showing works of internationally acclaimed contemporary artist duos. One of these is Austria-based Jana & JS who creates incredibly precise stencils of people in various poses. Their pieces are inspired by their personal photographic work. You can find these stencils outdoors in major European urban centers but here they’ve presented a body of work made of acrylic, spray paint and stencil on wood assemblages. I love how you can feel the vulnerability in each pose.

New Video of Simon Beck and His Magnificent Murals in the Snow

Remember artist Simon Beck? His name might sound familiar to you. Beck creates these magnificent murals in the snow solely by walking. (See 2012 article.) While I’ve seen many images of his amazing works, this is the first time I’ve actually watched a video of him in the process of creating.

Great Big Story, a company who’s dedicated to telling the stories of the untold, the overlooked and the flat-out amazing, just released this new video of Beck himself. As they explain:

“Two hours measuring; eight hours of work…For Simon Beck, the average snow mural consists of 40,000 steps (or the rough equivalent of a long day’s walk in the hills).

“It started as an alternative to hiking up a mountain, but gradually the activity began consuming Beck’s life.

“Great Big Story took to the skies over Powder Mountain Resort in Utah for a big-picture look at Beck’s recent work. The scale and grandeur of it was amazing…”

Below, check out some images of Beck’s recent work and then watch the video below to get to know the artist and his unbelievable work.

Adorable Family of Owls Painting by Tiffany Bozic

San Francisco-based artist Tiffany Bozic created this adorable painting of three owls resting on a pyramid of golden four leaf clover. It is called Triangle of Love. Look closely and you’ll see a delicate glistening string threading them together. This is meant to symbolize the universal and unconditional familial bond between mother, father and child. I found the charming work by way of Juxtapoz magazine, this piece landed on the front page cover of their March 2016 issue.

Bozic is opening a solo show at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery starting on March 17 and running until April 16, 2016. The Animal in Us will feature eight new works that focus on the connection between humans and animals. Bozic grew up in rural Arkansas where she witnessed, firsthand, animals’ cycle of life. Married to an ornithologist, she often accompanies her husband on expeditions to remote locations, which no less inspires her work.

I love collecting anything to do with owls so this piece speaks to my heart!

Ghostly Humanlike Figures in Europe’s First Underwater Sculpture Museum

British artist Jason deCaires Taylor just installed a new series of surreal installations underwater off the coast of Lanzarote, Spain. This is significant because it is the the first underwater contemporary art museum in Europe and the Atlantic Ocean. Called Museo Atlantico, it was constructed 14 meters beneath the water’s surface. The permanent installations are accessible to both snorkelers and divers. The museum will be open to visitors starting February 25, 2016.

The main installation is called The Rubicon and it consists of a ghostly group of 35 people walking toward something, be it a a gate, a point of no return, or a portal to another world. While some figures appear to be reading a book, others are solemnly walking with their eyes closed, content though unsure of where they are headed. I love how The Rubicon feels eerie, like you’ve come across a scary scene from a horror movie, a group of people who can’t be stopped.

You can read an in-depth article about these new works over on The Guardian.
