I’ll Miss Pete Souza’s Touching and Intimate Photos of President Obama

Throughout President Obama’s eight years in office, one photographer captured it all. He followed the President around, capturing pure moments for all the world to see. The Guardian just came out with a great article that tells us more about the man behind the camera, Pete Souza. We learn that Souza is familiar with the Oval Office because he was also the photographer for President Reagan. As the article states, “There may be more connecting Reagan and Obama than at first appears – and Souza can see it all. Both are great communicators. Neither let the pomp of office turn them into a stuffed shirt. Reagan, like Obama, had a human touch, a capacity to relate to people. Simply being human is a rare gift among modern politicians. Seeming relaxed in office is even rarer.”

More than anything, Souza’s able to capture the human side of the “most powerful man in the world.” He’s not just our leader, he’s a father and he’s a husband. The way President Obama plays with children, lovingly touching them or playing their games makes you appreciate his softer side. I’ll miss this President because he wasn’t just a great leader, he was an inspiring human being.

For the photo above: “There is a great image of the president pretending to be caught in an invisible web, thrown by a boy in a Spider-Man costume.”

1000

“In a moving monochrome image, Souza showed three-year-old Clark Reynolds looking up in awe as Obama touches him on the cheek. The photograph is taken from child height and brilliantly captures a child’s-eye view of the president. We only see Obama’s hand caressing Clark’s face. Unlike the ones in all paintings and photographs of all previous presidents, it is not a white hand. How can anyone say that means nothing? Young Clark Reynolds evidently thinks it means something, and so does Souza, whose photography has perhaps become more lyrical, more poignant over Obama’s final year in office.”

“July 2012 – For one small child, the Oval Office becomes a playground and the president a playmate.”

“June 2013 – Obama hugs his daughter Sasha during a visit to Nelson Mandela’s former prison cell in South Africa.”

“In 2012, he photographed Obama bowing to let five-year-old Jacob Philadelphia feel his head. The boy had told Obama: “I want to know if my hair is just like yours.” The president had replied: ‘Touch it, dude!'”

“March 2008 – Running down the White House’s East Colonnade with Bo, the family dog.”

“A more reflective portrait captures the tensions and secrets of power, as Obama is reflected in a White House mirror, finger to his lips, deep in a conspiratorial conversation.”

Couples in Love are Surrounded by Nature by Luke Liable

I found the photographer Luke Liable through a Huffington Post article called These 25 Photos Are Not Your Average Engagement Pics. Junebug Weddings just announced the winners of their annual engagement photo contest and Luke was one of them. His shot, above, was the cover photo on the Huffington Post article. Isn’t it scorching hot? “The 2016 collection is compelling, breathtaking, and undeniably sexy,” editor-in-chief Carrie Crooks of Junebug Weddings said in a press release.

Some of Luke’s photos have that Max Wanger negative space vibe going on (which I love). Luke is able to capture magical moments that make you wish you had taken that photo. It’s when everything comes together perfectly, the backdrop, the subjects, the light and you know it’s something you won’t ever be able to replicate. These 12 photos were of engagements or weddings. The one commonality is that they’re all taken in front of breathtaking backdrops. Whether that means snowy hills or the vast ocean, the photos show how nature is the most beautiful backdrop of all.

Here’s a bit about Luke:

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, I am a Vancouver based lifestyle & Editorial photographer. While I have spent most of my life fascinated by human nature and interested in stories that come from even the simplest interactions, My goal and passion is to capture moments and collect them into photos that tell a story or spark a memory. Whether it be a big or a small story, these are the moments that form the lives in front of us and leave a legacy beyond what we could hope for or imagine.

12 Father’s Day Gifts for the Modern Dad

Shopping for Father’s Day is tough, especially when your dad or husband has everything. Today, I’ve rounded up 12 gifts that any modern dad would love. Some items I’ve already given to Sam but most are items I think he’d enjoy.

Above: The I-1 Analog Instant Camera has been deemed the Polaroid of the future. It is the first new camera system in over 20 years in the original instant format. It’s an easy point and shoot instant camera that has a uniquely designed LED ring flash. It’s retro-modern goodness.

copy-paste

Here’s a great gift for any father who has a son who looks just like him. Copy and Paste by ThePaintedTee. (Parker looks so much like his father, I had to scoop a set up. Shhh don’t tell Sam.)

band

Have you ever seen a watch like this? This Faceless Watch tells time with LEDs built into the band. The hidden LEDs form red digital numbers at the press of a button. Otherwise, it just looks like a fancy chain.

lightweight-full-ziip

I got this lightweight full zip sweater in charcoal heather for Sam and he absolutely loves it! He gets hot pretty easily so this is perfect for him on those slightly chilly nights.

chart

The Chart of Cosmic Exploration is hand-illustrated renderings of every orbiter, lander, rover, flyby, and impactor to ever successfully be in the Earth’s orbit, plus all of the pretty planets in our solar system.

lumio-book-lamp-20106

When shut, the Lumio Book Lamp looks like an elegant hardcover book bound in laser-cut wood. Open it up, however, and it transforms into a beautiful sculpture of light. The Lumio was made by San Francisco-based designer Max Gunawan, who has a fascination with origami.

brown iphone wallet

It’s simple, it’s sleek and it’s understatedly cool. The Brown iPhone Wallet by Edward Field holds both your iPhone and your cash. Crafted from full-grain Italian calfskin leather, the wallet has slots for cards, pockets for receipts and cash, and attaches to the phone with an innovative micro-suction foam sheet.

bike spoke

How cool would it be to zoom around in these? The Monkeylectric Monkey Light are animated bicycle spoke lights that give viewers a fun light show. Just order two so you can show off both wheels.

astronaut

Called Funkalicious by Christopher Golebiowski, this is one t-shirt that will never go out of style. It’s retro-goodness. Love that the astronaut is carrying an old school boombox.

sand-art

For the guy who has everything, there’s Deep Sea Sand Art. Watch as this desk sculpture forms natural landscapes with sand.

levis-google-jacket

Have you heard about the Levi’s x Google Jacquard Commuter Trucker Jacket? It’s not out yet (sorry!) but it’s the beginning of a new wave of smart clothing. This is a biking-friendly jacket that will let you handle incoming calls, adjust volume, and bring up navigation info. It also talks to your phone over Bluetooth. Don’t worry, we’ll put it on next year’s wish list.

BLUE-SKATE-HI_1024x1024

The Scotchgard Sk8-Hi Slim Zip by Vans is a cool high top with a zipper at the heel. I like the unique touch.

Fun Links of the Week

Remember American Giant, the hoodie and t-shirt maker? I got my white t-shirts and I love them! They’re the perfect fit and length and Sam loves this lightweight hoodie I bought for him in black. Highly recommend.

Is it time to try out vibrating shoes?

This watering hole in Hawaii looks beautiful yet scary.

Looking to remodel? Here’s a guide with 200 custom color schemes based on every room in a home so you can find ideas for any type of remodeling project. (I always prefer white.)

These are not your average fish tanks.

Make your own happiness.

Simple in design, the tree lamp creates a beautiful shadow.

Are you a fan of coworking spaces?

Logo lovers, take a look.

Now that’s a beautifully adorned garage.

JR’s Louve illusion.

I must say, because of Instagram I’m liking Emilia Clarke more and more.

Does this news about Steve McCurry disappoint you?

Top 15 Images of the Last Two Weeks

Last week, I was helping with the fair so I couldn’t put up my Friday’s list of Top 10 Images of the Week. This week, I thought I’d combine the past two weeks into one post and show you 15 total images. Not only will you get a peek into the fair, you’ll see some photos of Logan playing at the park and hiding inside a huge box. As mentioned last time, I also took some photos of patterns that caught my eye.

Photo above shows Sam pointing out a hummingbird in a tree. This was during one of our hikes at Santa Rosa Plateau.

bofw5-27-IMG_0199

Parker borrowed this toy car from a neighborhood kid. He loved zooming around in it.

bofw5-27-IMG_0205

I like the look of the colorful wheel at this angle.

bofw5-27-IMG_0206

On our walk, I spotted this yellow fire hydrant surrounded by pink roses. Pretty sight.

bofw5-27-IMG_0231

That’s Logan listening intently for the ice cream truck. (Sadly, it didn’t come that day.)

bofw5-27-IMG_6097-2

I took Logan to a close neighborhood park. I like all the lines in this picture.

bofw5-27-IMG_6117-2

The park was really empty so I got to place around with symmetry.

bofw5-27-IMG_6137

At this year’s fair, I only brought my iPhone but was happy to capture this shot of Parker greeting his dad.

bofw5-27-IMG_6146

First stop at the fair was at the fireman’s truck. They were kind enough to give us this photo op. Surprisingly, Parker was pretty shy.

bofw5-27-IMG_6172

Can’t beat 50-cent snowcones! Bu the time Logan finished his, all of the syrup was over his white shirt.

bofw5-27-IMG_6200

At the fair, in the petting zoo, Parker got to feed both the turtle and the birds.

bofw5-27-IMG_0296

Here’s an outtake from our Disneyland trip. I love Riverton’s face of pure joy.

bofw5-27-IMG_0374

Out of all the toys at my sister’s place, the boys gravitated towards this big, empty box. I guess it’s like a mini man-cave!

bofw5-27-IMG_0047

These stones are part of a pathway at my in-laws house. I like how they’re all different sizes but they make up a cohesive pattern.

bofw5-27-IMG_0056

Smooth stones look beautiful when interspersed with golden leaves.

New Book Shows the Explosively Detailed Art of Kerby Rosanes

Truth be told, I’ve been a fan of Kerby Rosanes for quite some time. The moment I laid eyes on his incredibly detailed sketches I was blown away by his talent. He’s the author of several books, including coloring books (if you’re into that), and he’s now come out with a brand new book called Sketchy Stories, that’s presented as a Moleskine notebook. Loaded with secret doodles, elaborate sketches, whimsical lines and detailed patterns, it’s a must-have for anyone who has ever picked up a pen and doodled before.

Interspersed with his artwork, Kerby also includes techniques, tips, inspirations, and influences. In total, it’s a 128 page book. I liked this review on Amazon: “This is a journal-like book with an elastic closure filled with beautiful and clever illustrations. It is the type of art that you can look at over and over again and always see something new. It isn’t specifically suggested that you can color this art in but you could as it is all black and white line art. The art has meanings, puns and double entendre along with cute little creatures, deer, birds and all sorts of things. A complete feast for the eyes!”

Here’s some of the work you’ll find inside.

Beautiful Faux Bouquets by Abigail Ahern

Though I love getting fresh flowers, I’m terrible at keeping them alive. That’s why when I saw these beautiful faux bouquets on Terrain’s website I thought these would be perfect! They’re remarkably realistic and the best part is you don’t have to water them. English designer Abigail Ahern hand-assembles each bouquet and creates beautiful combinations of flowers. My favorite is Lavender Meadow (which you see above). It’s made of tiny blossoms in shades of periwinkle and lavender. Set in a tin jar, it looks rustic yet timeless. (Since I love the smell of lavender, I’d probably buy this mist to go along with it.)

The flowers are not dried. They’re made of silk, plastic and wire. I never knew that silk flowers could look so realistic!

White Meadow Faux Bouquet

I’m also loving this dried rose and Larkspur bouquet and this dried globe amaranth bunch in red. Also, this faux magnolia branch would look classic in a simple blue vase, as pictured. It almost looks like the wind is blowing it.

Our Family Trip to Disneyland (Really, California Adventure)

With the fair being on a Saturday, Sam and I decided to take a day off on Monday to relax with the kids. The fair went well, by the way, there were thousands of people and Parker got to hang out and talk to the community’s policemen, firemen and ambulance drivers. Moms, you know how much that means.

We called our brother-in-law, Burt, to ask him if he wanted to meet us up at Disneyland. We spent about three hours eating and playing at the California Adventure side of the park. I lugged my big DSLR to Disneyland for the very first time. (I’d always just take pictures using my iPhone but I wanted to practice shooting with a higher quality camera). For the most part, it wasn’t too hard balancing two kids and a huge camera. I had to sneak in my pictures where I could. I kept thinking – Line, Light, Moment. I actually want to go back to Disneyland, sans kids, and take pictures of patterns or symmetry at the park.

Alas, here are my pictures from Monday.

disneyland-IMG_0252

Logan and Parker in Downtown Disney taking a break before we entered the park.

disneyland-IMG_0262

My nephew Riverton wanted to hold hands with Parker. It was so sweet.

disneyland-IMG_0268

Parker didn’t want to ride on Little Mermaid with the rest of the group, so we just hung out at one of the benches.

disneyland-IMG_0285

My brother-in-law, Burt, and his son, Riverton, watching the Toy Story green army parade.

disneyland-IMG_0320

The three kids hanging around, checking out the big lake and the large ferris wheel.

disneyland-IMG_0325

Logan and Parker love playing the fishing game. It’s a guaranteed winner every time. We end up with lots of stuffed animals but we give them away to random strangers just because.

disneyland-IMG_0326

Sam bought a lot of credits so the kids went fishing for quite some time.

disneyland-IMG_0339

Riverton won two medium size prizes which came out to two Mickey Mouses! He was over the moon.

disneyland-IMG_0348

We rode the carousel next. Parker’s a big boy now so he can ride all by himself. Logan, not so much. He started kicking and screaming. (I had flashbacks to the tram ride at the Wild Animal Park.) Poor Sam almost had to take him off but luckily Logan calmed down.

disneyland-IMG_0349

Logan’s sweet spot. (Over Sammy’s left shoulder.)

disneyland-IMG_0350

He quickly fell asleep and stayed in that position for at least an hour. (Poor Sam’s arms.)

disneyland-IMG_0356

We bought Riverton and Parker each a new car. Damn that store, Ridemakerz, on the way out! The car version of Build-A-Bear is kind of genius, though. Parker got his remote control-style Lightning McQueen car. The kids had a blast playing with it once we got back to Burt’s house.
