Celebrating My Nephew’s First Birthday (Dol)

This past weekend, my side of the family and Sam’s side of the family got together to celebrate my nephew, Koda’s, first birthday or dol. It’s a big deal in Korean tradition, families throw huge parties inviting hundreds of guests. Like we did for Logan, Sam’s brother decided to keep it more intimate by inviting just family. With all the kids running around, it was still a packed house.

The cake was the best, it had a mini Yoda on top with the words, MAY THE 1ST BE WITH YOU, written on the bottom. It was by Eleana Perez, here’s her website and Instagram. Not only was the cake a piece of art, it was delicious, too! (Inside was a chocolate cake with fresh strawberries.)

The highlights of the day included the doljabi (read more about it below) and watching the kids run through the snake water sprinkler. (I wouldn’t recommend it since it popped early on.) All in all, it was a great time had by all.

My mother-in-law set up the table with fruit and tteok (Korean rice cakes). Here, we were all trying to get Koda to smile.

The dol’s main event is a ritual called the doljabi where the child is placed in front of various objects such as string, money, a microphone and a stethoscope. The object symbolizes what the child will grow up to be or have. String means long life, money means wealth, microphone means entertainer and stethoscope means doctor. He chose the microphone! Maybe he’ll be a Korea pop star.

Next, we all gathered to watch Koda eat his mini cake. All the kids helped him by digging right in.

Sam also set up this snake that sprayed water. The kids got a kick out of it, running through it and screaming.

Stunning Lifelike Paintings of Michael Phelps

While most of us just sit back and admire the historic accomplishments of swimmer Michael Phelps, one artist takes his admiration to another level. Your eyes will almost be fooled. These magnificent images of Michael Phelps are actually paintings and not photographs! So far, fine artist Walt Peterson has created two pieces. The first painting he created, an overview shot of Phelps, was a private commission. He spent over 100 hours on the 30″ x 40″ image that show the swimmer’s huge wingspan as he swims his signature stroke, the butterfly.

413be3a1-39c1-4ec4-8dda-cb723cc25600

The second piece is titled the “Swimming Machine”. Again, it shows Phelps swimming the butterfly, but it was created from a different point of view, head on. It measures 40″ x 18″ and was painted in oils. This piece is available and priced at $12,000.

All of Peterson’s pieces are painted from digital references that he views from a monitor.

What do the paintings mean to him? “I grew up swimming competitively,” he told me. “I was a breaststroker and my claim to fame was that I was 5th in the United States when I was 10 years old.

“I’ve always admired Michaels natural abilities, his physique, with his super long torso, is so ideal for swimming, and his dedication. In my humble opinion, he will go down as the best athlete of our time period!”

A third piece is in the works. It will show Michael Phelps doing the breakstroke. To make it even more realistic and current, Peterson will include the “cupping” marks on Phelps’ body.

Fun Links of the Week

Have you guys been watching the Olympics? So happy that Michael Phelps and Simone Biles have been killing it!

What are you up to this weekend? It’s my nephew’s first birthday so Sam’s family and my family are gathering together to celebrate. In Korean tradition, the first birthday is a big deal. It’s called a dol. In the past, death rates for children were high and many died before their first birthday, so it was an important milestone for the baby. Whole villages would gather to celebrate, sharing food and wishing good fortune.

Now, here are the fun links of the week.

What a powerful Time magazine cover.

This dress reminds me of a watercolor painting.

Moves that make Simone Biles unbeatable.

Just how much is 100 calories? (That’s a lot of asparagus.)

I love giant pivoting doors.

My favorite street artist duo has an upcoming show in New York.

What do you think of the otami print trend? I like the prints on walls.

Look at all the cool things you can do with washi tape. (I like the geometric pattern on the wall.)

I love this Olympian’s realness.

Loosen your grip!

Did you watch Ryan Phelps’ best flip turn of his life?

Makes me proud to be a woman.

I’m happy for James Corden. Drop the Mic is hilarious! (Did you see Cara Delevigne and Dave Franco’s? So good.)

12 Nature-Inspired Art Prints

I’m always on the look out for some good art or photography to hang on my walls. This time, I thought I’d try to find some nature-inspired scenes. You know, beaches, animals, mountains. Here’s what I came up with.

“I have always found it a powerful experience to look into the vast horizon of an expanse of water. It reminds me of how small I am as a person in the world, and there is something both intimidating and reassuring in this thought. This view, no matter how many times I’ve seen it, never ceases to affect me. This photograph is about this feeling-just one small person looking out across the water.”

“For this photo, I was standing in a downpour. Shortly thereafter the rain stopped, the lead-colored clouds were carried away and the lake restored its calmness again. Suddenly, the brightest sun showed up and its light glittered on the surface of the water. The dew on every plant began to evaporate, their scents carried away by the gentle breeze. I was in the midst of seasonal changes, summer enchantment.”

Artist Transforms Clothing with Beautifully Embroidered Flowers

While many people look at a tank top, a t-shirt or jeans as just regular clothing, artist Tessa Perlow sees them as the perfect canvases for her embroidery. The New Jersey-based artist covers up parts of clothes with beautifully embroidered images like animals or flowers. I was especially entranced by her flower embroidery, they breathe new life into plain clothing. Each piece is totally and completely unique. Though I’m a minimalist, who prefers to wear black or white, I would definitely don her clothing. It’s like wearing art!

You can keep up with Perlow on her Instagram. She’ll let you know of a new piece that’s available for sale on her Etsy shop.

New “Beach” of 1.2 Million White Balls in Tampa

Downtown Tampa, you’re now home to the latest and greatest installation by Snarkitecture, 15,000 square feet filled with an ocean of 1.2 million white balls. There’s no sand and surf here but you can dive into an enormous “Chuck E. Cheese”-like ball pit. Adding to the never-ending beach illusion are mirrored walls!

More: “The Beach will be staged in an all-white enclosure made of construction materials including scaffolding, wall panels, and perforated mesh, creating a sense of wonder and anticipation, while also recalling a boardwalk beach arcade. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to go for a ‘swim’, enjoy the view from the water’s edge, or stroll along the pier. The shore will be a site of relaxation and activity, complete with monochromatic beach hut, beach chairs, umbrellas, and other beach activities for visitors. The 75-foot wide shoreline opens up to an ocean of balls enclosed within mirrored walls that will create an infinite reflected expanse.”

Open to the public at no cost, The Beach Tampa begins today, August 5th, and runs till August 25, 2016 at the Amalie Arena, home to NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. Before going, make sure to grab a ticket.

How fun would it be to jump into the middle of this? Instagrammers are now coming out with first pics.

U.S. Olympic swim team does carpool karaoke. (Looks like they’re having fun.)

This makes me want to dance.

Geode wedding cakes are actually a thing. (They’re pretty cool.)

Have you tried the hottest drink of the summer?

Want to learn about artistic portrait photography? (Zhang Jingna is so talented.)

Have you read this? President Barack Obama says, “This Is What a Feminist Looks Like”.

Amazon’s Daily Dish service is pretty neat.

This cloud tape dispenser needs to be on my desk.

What a sweet tweet from our VP.

Beautiful poem. “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.”

Isn’t this floral agenda so pretty?

How fresh does this geometric canvas pouch look?

I love these animated gifs of Olympians.

Thinking about getting this animal book for my kids. (See video on my Facebook page.)

On the subject of books, have always wanted to learn this.

Design-themed Instagram accounts.

Love JR’s Olympics’ installations in Rio.

20 Novelty Clutches That are Quirky and Fun

As a person who likes to spot trends, it makes me excited when I see one that’s both quirky and cool. Lately, temporary tattoos, enamel pins, flamingo pool floats, and patches have been all the rage but something I’m seeing more and more these days are novelty clutches. During Paris fashion week, stylish lifestyle blogger Chriselle Lim sported a chic Erin Fetherson bag that had a doll face on the front (see last one in this post). Of course, you can always count on Betsy Johnson and Kate Spade to come out with their own creative versions. Since I grew up in the ’80s, I’m all about that Pac-Man ghost purse. Just to note, some of these are so popular they’re already sold out. Nevertheless, enjoy the list.
