Beautiful Use of Negative Space in Wedding Photography

It’s not often that wedding photos stop me in my tracks. Photographer Jess Barfield can be credited for taking these wedding photos that incorporate negative space. (They remind me of Max Wanger’s photos.) The unique floral installations juxtaposed on the front of the all-white barn adds a dramatic touch. Of course, the bride is beautiful in her geometric-inspired dress and her bright red lips. I love it when a bride looks modern but timeless at the same time.

Recently, Style Me Pretty listed negative space as one of the top wedding trends you’ll see everywhere in 2017. Event Design + Styling company, Bird of a Feather Events was in charge of this dreamy wedding. Here’s what they said about negative space in wedding photography, “I think we will see more and more flower arrangements and tablescapes with negative space as part of the design. We are already seeing this in florals as the Ikebana style of arranging florals is becoming more popular within the industry.”

Primary: Colorful, Affordable Clothing for Kids

Like many moms, I love dressing my kids. Problem is that I’m attracted to basic clothes with bright colors. Sometimes that just means pairing a plain white t-shirt with green shorts. Who knew it would be that hard to find a good, basic white t-shirt? I’ve scoured the internet for it, checking the Gap, J-Crew and Amazon for something that’s good quality yet affordable. Though I love J-Crew’s and Boden’s kids’ clothes, t-shirts usually have big graphics on them or they’re just too expensive.

Enter Primary! Launched in 2015 by two mom entrepreneurs, this website is exactly what I’ve been looking for. This online only shop has been compared to Warby Parker or American Apparel. It only sells basics but in an array of bright colors. Though I haven’t tried them on my kids yet, I did spend a good part of my morning browsing their website. I ended up buying a lot of raspberry and cobalt blue clothes.

Their website is super easy to navigate. You can read a recent Forbes article about this company and a personal review of their clothes on the website Hello, Wonderful.

Here’s their pitch:
“A Happy Revolution in Kids Clothing. No logos, no slogans, no sequins. Just awesome colors in the softest fabrics we could find, all under $25.”

I’m sold!

Beautifully Ethereal Oil Paintings by Stanka Kordic

While watching my first CreativeLive video, Finding, Defining, and Marketing Your Photographic Style, I learned that we can find our own photographic style by emulating our favorite artists. We don’t copy them outright, rather, we analyze their work and think about what elements of theirs we can add to our photography. Teacher and fellow photographer Julia Kelleher challenged her class to find three sources of inspiration. These people can be painters, designers, digital artists or even other photographers. I racked my brain to come up with my top three. They would be Max Wanger (love his use of negative space), the late and great Rodney Smith (his compositions were impeccable) and Audrey Kawasaki (her oil paintings on wood panel take my breath away).

One of the artists that Kelleher is inspired by is Stanka Kordic. During all my time at My Modern Met, I had never heard of this painter before. As I looked through her body of work, I fell in love with her style. In particular, I love how she paints flower petals, they look like they’re swirling in the air. It’s almost as if you can see the wind. Her mother/daughter paintings are especially evocative. They remind me of the pure love a mother has for her child.

Here’s what Artist A Day On-line Magazine wrote about her work:
“Stanka Kordic’s collectors would say her work affects them on many levels. To see her entire body of work, the art critic may have trouble putting her into a specific category. Both would agree she is one our best modern painters. Neither traditional impressionism nor expressionism, nor figurative realism can be used to label Stanka Kordic. Her paintings speak for themselves, never nostalgic replications of by-gone days, but truly contemporary and magnificent examples of Modern Art rendered with the skill and passion of the Master’s traditions. Her paintings provide lasting pleasure as one is always delighted to find a previously undiscovered passage with each new glance.”

My 10 Resolutions for 2017

Ah, another year. Time to set some resolutions, right? Today, I thought I would write down some things I’d like to work on this year, both personally and professionally. It’s always nice to see your goals in writing so that you can reflect on them every so often. This year, I’d like to concentrate on being a good spouse, parent and photographer. So here goes:

1. Be more kind and attentive to my husband: With all the craziness that comes with having kids, it’s easy to forget how good of a spouse you have. This year I’m going to think about how I can make Sam happy. This means just making his life easier. When he’s stressed out with the kids, to give him a break. When he’s busy with work, to take care of the family.

2. To not scream or yell at the kids: Recently, during a fight between Parker and Logan, Parker attacked Logan’s face. I went completely ballistic, yelling at Parker for hurting his brother. I don’t want my child to live in fear. I wish I had given myself a few minutes to compose myself before I talked to Parker.

3. To take photographs every day: This one’s hard, especially because by the time I get home it’s too dark to take photographs outside. Even if it’s just on my iPhone, I want to capture more shots.

4. To photograph outside my comfort zone: I want to push myself to take photographs, not just of my sons, but of still life or landscapes. I want to find the genre that most interests me, one that I can imagine myself pursuing in the long run.

5. To watch videos on how to improve my photography skills a few times a week: Since (re-)discovering CreativeLive, I’m really enjoying learning more about photography. This year, I’d like to take what I’ve learned and apply it to my photography.

6. To find some one-on-one time with each kid: I think it’s because we all now sleep in the same room, but Logan has finally warmed up to me. (Yay!) This year, I’d like to spend some alone time with each kid. I think it’ll help strengthen my bond with each of them.

7. To take more trips: It’s easy to stay in but there’s something refreshing about exploring a new place. This year, I’d like to take some trips as just a couple or as a family. I think Logan’s now at that age where we can just pack up and go. (Hooray!)

8. To get more proficient at Photoshop: I taught myself Lightroom but Photoshop is its own beast. This year, I’d like to get really good at making/manipulating images in Photoshop.

9. To cook more for the kids: I’m lucky because I have a nanny who cooks, but it also makes me rely on her to come up with our family’s meals. I want to find more healthy dishes to feed to my kids.

10. To find the time to reconnect with friends: I’ve read that one of the biggest things that causes people to be happy is their relationships with other people. This year, I’m going to call my friends more, meet them up for lunch or dinner or just send a simple text or email.

What are some of your New Year’s resolutions?

My Favorite Christmas Present: The Amazon Echo Dot

Sam and I don’t usually exchange gifts but when we find something we both would enjoy, we dive in head first. After my sister, Carol, showed us the wonders of her Amazon Echo Dot, we decided we’d gift it to each other. We couldn’t be happier!

We bought two initially, and then we set up two more. Now, we can play our favorite songs in four rooms of the house – the kitchen (while washing dishes), the master bedroom, the kids’ playroom and the extra bedroom, where we all sleep together. (Yes, we co-sleep. And I’m proud of it!)

Here are 10 handy thing we’ve learned so far:

1. You don’t have to pick a specific song (though you can). You can just say the name of the artist and it’ll shuffle songs from him or her. For instance, you can just say, “Alexa, play Kaskade” and it’ll play music from that DJ. (We signed up for Amazon Music Unlimited which gives us access to tens of millions of songs. You can start with a free 30 day trial. By default you get your music streamed by Amazon Prime, so it pays to be a member. It has over 2 million songs.)

2. You can just pick a genre. Sometimes I’m in the mood for some calming music. All I have to say is, “Alexa, play meditation music” or “Alexa, play classical music” and it’ll choose songs in that genre.

3. Alexa can give you a news briefing. Just say, “Alexa, what’s in the news?” or “Alexa, what’s my Flash Briefing?”

4. One of the most used features in our house is, “Alexa, what is the weather going to be like today?” This helps us figure out how to dress the kids for school.

5. Sync it to your Nest and you then you can ask Alexa to turn your temperature up or down. We use, “Alexa, set the upstairs temperature to 72 degrees.” It’s the best when you’re coming out of the shower and you want to heat up your house.

6. We have Philips Hue Lights so we can ask Alexa to dim the lights or turn them on or off. We say, “Alexa, turn the kids’ light off” or “Alexa, turn the kids’ light to 10%”.

7. I’ve also used Alexa to give me facts like, “How big is the sun?” or “What’s the definition of pernicious?”

8. Alexa can set an alarm for you. You just have to say, “Alexa, set an alarm for 7am.” You can even set a recurring alarm.

9. Though this one is a little bit silly, Alexa can flip a coin for you. Say, “Alexa, flip a coin” and it will pick heads or tails.

10. If you’re looking for more than just a quick fact or definition, you can Wikipedia something. Say, “Alexa, Wikipedia: [subject].”

Here’s a good list that CNET has put together of all the things Alexa can do. Mostly, I like Alexa because she brings more music into our house. It creates a happier, more joyful place. (Just ask Parker, who has these three songs on repeat: “Beat It” by Michael Jackson, “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake and “The Gummy Bear Song” by Gummibär.)

Fun Links of the Week

I’ll be taking tomorrow and Monday off to hang out with my boys and enjoy a little R&R. I thought what better way to end the year than with another edition of Fun Links of the Week. (I should be putting up Fun Links of the Year but that would be too crazy!) I have included some year end, wrap-up posts, however, for those in need of some closure.

That being said, I hope you are enjoying some time off. You deserve it! Let’s meet back in 2017. I know this is a little early, but, “Happy New Year!” Here’s to an amazing 2017.

Sam and I bought each other this for Christmas. It’s the best thing ever. (Thank you, Amazon.)

What a beautifully modern house. (Those pivoting glass doors!)

This pink silk ruffle top is the epitome of elegance.

I like how you can do these simple yet dazzling make-up tricks with just glitter.

Drawings don’t have to be complicated to be heartfelt or cute.

8 books that will change your life in 2017. (Already read Year of Yes, interested in Emotional Agility.)

This porcelain white tea mug with handmade lavender paintings is so pretty.

I’m debating on whether or not to buy this Star Stuff print.

I wish I could buy this as a print.

Can’t wait to see how Disney pulls this off.

In 2016, what were the big stories in Urban Innovation?

I admire the fact that Carrie Fisher talked about being bipolar. #InHonorOfCarrie

Love this neon ice cream artwork. (Too bad it’s sold out.)

Admit it. Are you a Yuccie?

Mesmerizing Gifs of Flowers and Insects by Anna Taberko

tumblr_ogm7cjpqby1t0x810o1_540
I am completely mesmerized by these gifs by Anna Taberko. Inspired by fellow artist, Nicolas Fong, she created these gifs that feature flowers and insects. My favorite one (above) shows pollination, where carpenter bees swirl swiftly around white daisies, picking up pollen on their way.

In case you wanted to brush up on your knowledge of the pollination process, where’s what SF Gate says, “When a bee lands on a daisy flower, it immediately seeks out nectar; in the process, it picks up thousands of microscopic pollen grains on its body. As it moves around on the daisy, it redeposits the pollen from the male anthers to the female stigmas. It also moves from flower to flower repeating this procedure hundreds of times each day. Bees transport some of the pollen back to the hive, where it rubs off on the bodies of other bees, which keeps the pollination process going.”

Beautiful Illustrations Highlight the Natural Beauty of Japan

If you have ever wanted to take a trip to Japan, let Tatsuro Kiuchi be your guide. He’s the artist behind these beautiful illustrations that highlight the country’s natural beauty. These were cover illustrations of Please, a free brochure issued monthly by Japan Railway Kyushu. You can find one of these brochures at one of many of the trains stations located in Kyushu.

Often, Kiuchi is asked to illustrate a historic landmark or famous spot featured in the booklet. For the waterfall work, seen immediately below, he needed to illustrate one of the popular waterfalls located in Kyushu’s Kagoshima Prefecture. As he explained, “I thought it could make an interesting and unusual composition by depicting a waterfall from very far away in [the] distance to show how it existed as a part in nature.

The piece was awarded a silver medal in the institutional category by Society of Illustrators Illustrators 56.

My favorites works are the ones showing cherry blossom trees and fields of flowers.

I also love this whimsical series featuring children and books.

Fashion Trend I Love: Color Blocking

There’s some trends that go in and out and others that stand the test of time. I love that a lot of the brands I buy from are making clothes that are color blocked. Here’s the general definition of it: “Color blocking is a current fashion trend that combines/features contrasting colors on a garment in bold blocks. Using color theory, when color blocking, you can combine complimentary colors in a garment that normally would have been worn with basic black or a neutral.”

This easy style is as simple as strategically wearing contrasting, but still complementary, bold and bright colors together in an outfit. The easy way to see this is by this graphic.

how-to3

You make a triangle on the color wheel and choose two of the three colors that the corners touch. These colors supposedly harmonize well.

For years, I’d just wear black and white. Through color blocking, I’m discovering my love for colors. The clothes look fresh, modern and fashion forward. More than just buying one piece off the rack, like a dress or a sweater, I love how a lot of women are embracing this trend by wearing their own purposefully arranged outfits. It take a lot of creativity and courage!

Here are 20 of my favorite examples.
