I came across the work of Linn Wold and was intrigued by its unusual beauty. I love it when artists merge nature with the female form. Here, she takes feathers or birds and incorporates them nicely into hair, shoulders, arms and eyelashes.
Wold is a Norwegian artist, illustrator and graphic designer.
I got my hair dyed pink Friday but it didn’t come out completely as planned. (Hence no Instagram pic.) It’s more like a sunset – my roots came out pink but the rest of my hair is a dirty blonde. I have to go back on Friday to get the whole head done. (Just wanted to give you an update on the hair.)
Last week, I got excited because, while I was in the shower, I decided that I finally found my true career path. It’s ben over a year since I left My Modern Met, and since then I thought I wanted to be a photographer. Rodney Smith, Tim Walker, Max Wanger, these were my inspirations.
I went home and started tearing pages out of magazines. I went on Pinterest and started pinning like mad. I want to be a designer, I decided. A fashion designer, perhaps or just a curator of products, like clothes, art, and fashion. Sammy knew something was up and voiced his concern. I said I was fine. But then something snapped. On Saturday, we went to Disneyland and I felt so paranoid that we only made it to the LEGO store, we had to turn back.
I’ve spent the last few days holed up in my house, too scared to even visit Target. When I finally did, I saw messages on people’s clothing. On a pair of leggings it read,”Be strong.” My mother-in-law came into my office this morning and said those exact same words.
I hope I am coming back to reality. That the increase in medication has brought me back down to earth. I have a psych appointment tomorrow.
In the meantime, I’ve decided to post on “trends” or art and design that moves me. I’m going to move away from photography and focus more on design. I came across these sayings by Nick Miller via Urbanic, who’s producing an exclusive collection of cards and prints with him. These spoke to me.
Tomorrow, I’ll be spending the morning doing something drastic to my hair! I’m changing it from the galaxy-style color to metallic rose. “Metallic, what?,” you may be asking. It’s not straight out pink (though bubblegum pink would be pretty cool), rather, it’s pink with a metallic shine. It’s almost a blend between pink and purple. I hope my colorist can pull it off. Wish me luck!
I won’t be around to give you our usual Friday Links of the Week post but I’ll try to keep you up to date on the hair situation via Instagram. Have a splendid weekend and do something daring too, would ya? đ
According to this news article, the pom-pom trend officially started back in 2015, when Fendi created a keychains made of pom-poms and googly eyes. “It” girl Cara Delevingne was often spotted with her Fendi âbag bugâ around. In the summer of 2016, the trend exploded and now, it’s been incorporated into a lot of everyday shops, like J.Crew and Asos. Sure, one search of “pom pom clothes” on Pinterest and you can see garish examples of how some companies overkilled the trend but for the most part, when done right, pom-poms are here to stay. (That’s right, I said it!) And why not? It’s playful and fun and it doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Today, I thought I’d round up some sweet and subtle ways to incorporate the pom-pom trend into your wardrobe. On a side note, you may be thinking, “I could do this with some pom-poms I could buy at the dollar store!” Yes, you probably could. May these examples inspire you!
Pitusa Pom Pom Festival Dress
This white dress is lined with colorful pom-poms. Since it’s only one-size, it looks like something you could just slip on.
Aquazzura Pom Pom Flat Sandals
If there’s one shoe that does pom-poms right, it’s these found on ShopBop. Yes, they’re incredibly expensive at $735 but, then again, they’re so popular they sold out!
Pom sweater at Bleeker St. in Melbourne
Bri Emery of DesignLoveFest found this adorable pom-pom sweater at a vintage store called Bleeker St. in Melbourne. The black sweater is adorned with colorful pom-poms. Too bad I can’t find it online!
Catarzi Straw Hat with Pom Pom Trim
An Asos exclusive, this cute straw hat would look cute at a music festival, wouldn’t it? Here, I like how it’s paired with a rainbow belt.
Pixie Market Chambray Tassel Pants
Though I’d call these more tassels than pom-poms, they kind of look the same. Again, sad that these are sold out. Guess we missed the boat on this one!
Nannacay Joana Multi Medium Tote
Blair Eadie of the blog Atlantic Pacific shows off this fun tote. It looks like the perfect size, a bag you can take anywhere.
Sophie Pom Pom Earrings
These drop earrings are in a color combination I love, gold and pink. They look slightly retro, which I like, too.
Navy Pom Pom Knit Sweater
I actually own this sweater. Do you remember me mentioning it in this post? The sweater is a little boxy but I love how the white pom-poms stick out of the sweater. I feel whimsical wearing it.
After having two kids, I have resigned to the fact that I will no longer be a size six again. (Well, not in the near future. Let’s have some hope) For about three years after I had my second son, Logan, I dressed in the standard: black leggings and long shift dress with no shape. I guess you could say I was embarrassed of my body, the bulge in my belly, the extra padding in my bum. Then, one day while I was having a conversation with my therapist, and I realized that how you feel about yourself all comes from within and that you can be stylish and confident at any size. So now I buy a size 10 or a large and I’m loud and I’m proud!
Last winter, I was all about Boden. They were having a 40-50% off sale that caught my attention so I bought eight dresses that cost me from $30 to $130 dollars each. I couldn’t be happier with the quality and fit. For those of you out there who shop at J.Crew, make sure to check out Boden, too.
Alas, this post is about a new beginning. I signed up to receive a bag at thredUP so that I can sell my old clothes there that I’ve either never worn or that no longer fit. Out goes the old, in goes the new, right?
So, I checked out J.Crew today and was pleased to see that they’re having a great sale with an extra 40% off all final sale items. Of course, while I was poking around I came across some full cost items that were calling my name so I splurged on those, too. Now, by no means am I a shopaholic or a fashionista, but I do appreciate anything pretty (usually pink), bright pops of color and timeless pieces. Lately, I’ve been all about colorblocking so I’ve been picking out vibrant shoes and accessories. Here are the nine items that were either on sale or I splurged on at J.Crew.
Collection Olivia topcoat with grosgrain ribbon
I bought this coat in the candy pink color. I need a warm jacket for the winter and just looking at this makes me happy. It was hard deciding between the gray and pink one. I love that the gray one has that cool bright blue color on the backside of the collar.
Linen peplum dress
I love how this has a simple silhouette but has that feminine ruffled flair at the hip. I got it in white so that I could dress it up with bright, poppy heels.
Signet bag in Italian leather
Right now I carry a big tote bag with me to work. Granted, I need it to carry my big planner and camera but on the weekends or days off it would be nice to carry something smaller. This bag looks like it would be the perfect size and shape. Great color combo here. Eyeing the pink and the colorblock one, too. Too bad the red one is sold out.
Colette suede d’Orsay pumps
This is a classic pump but the bright blue/purple color gives it a nice modern twist.
Ryan sunglasses
I’ve been looking to buy a good pair of sunglasses that are not too expensive. I don’t like sunglasses with huge logos displayed on the sides. I’m a sucker for anything pink and pretty so these cat eye glasses grabbed my attention.
Tippi turtleneck sweater in stripe
I like how this isn’t your average colored turtleneck. The red and purple combination gives it some edge.
Lea ballet flats in suede
As much as I think heels look nice on a woman, I cannot for the life of my wear them. I’m more of a flats type of girl. With so many choices out there now, I think it’s easy to still look cute in them. I like how this pair is in soft suede and how it’s in two shades of pink. (Yes, I love things that are pretty.)
Elsie cap-toe pumps
Ok, here’s an exception to my heels rule. (See above.) This pair of shoes was the most expensive item on my list. You know when you see a pair of shoes and you just have to have them? I love the color combination, how the pink and red compliment each other. It’s fresh and modern.
The Tippi Sweater in embroidered stars
I saw this in the J.Crew catalog and loved the fact that it had embroidered gold stars. It was so popular on the J.Crew website that it sold out so I found it on Ebay instead.
I’m not ashamed to tell people that I have bipolar disorder. It started about two and a half years ago and I’ve relapsed into full blown mania twice. It’s hard to explain what mania feels like. For me, it’s like someone has taken over my mind, I’m battling these inner demons that won’t let up. My mind is going a million miles a minute and I don’t trust a single soul.
I found these quotes and illustrations on Healthy Place that give you a peek inside the mind of a mentally ill person. I like how some of them show the positive side.
Banksy’s Twitter fan account recently put up this image with the caption “a very important reminder”. I’m not sure if it’s an actual Banksy piece, but it does look like something he’d do. In any case, it’s a good message.
Saturday was a historic day. I wasn’t able to attend a Women’s March because I had to attend to Parker’s future school situation but I saw all the action through the news and social media. It made me so proud to be a woman and it gave me hope that we all can come together to fight for what we believe in.
On CNN, I heard America Ferrera’s speech to the Washington DC crowd. It was powerful.
“We march today for the moral core of this nation, against which our new president is waging a war. Our dignity, our character, our rights have all been under attack, and a platform of hate and division assumed power yesterday. But the president is not America. … We are America, and we are here to stay.”
A few pictures that stayed with me was the one above taken by Eric Garcetti of the massive LA crowd (750,000 strong!) and of the one photographer Sam Horine took of the rally in New York City at 42nd Street. There are more people than the eye can see!
And the signs! They were so creative. Here were a few of my favorites.
“The radical possibility of the Womenâs March, the hope that hasnât been squashed, is a broad alignment of straight, middle-class white women with all the people who were glad to stand beside them and march: the black and queer and disabled women, the minimum-wage workers and undocumented immigrants, all the people whose rights to self-determination are constantly under threat. The crowds on Saturday were so enormous, so radiant with love and dissent, that this larger coming together seemed possible. As Trumpâs Administration proves itself unkind to all but the wealthy, perhaps there is a coalition ready to speak their hearts, to listen, to welcome anyone in.”
Ellen DeGeneres honors Barack Obama in the only way she can.
One day, I’d like to decorate my house (and dress up) in only gray, white, pink, and gold. Here’s a pink chair that I’d want to start with. (See it in blush.)
Though I had heard about the movie La La Land early on, it was only when I read this article about how Tom Hanks praised it during his own Q&A at the Telluride Film Festival that made me really want to watch the musical. “Who does that?”, I thought. (This was back in September.)
Hanks had a chance to watch La La Land at the festival and just sold it to me.
Said Hanks, âI like to think we approach movies the same way we approach being members of the audience in that you just want to see something you have never seen before. Itâs funny. Who saw La La Land yesterday?â (Many answered in the affirmative by their applause.)
âWhen you see something that is brand new, that you canât imagine, and you think âwell thank God this landedâ, because I think a movie like La La Land would be anethema to studios. Number one, it is a musical and no one knows the songs.â
Hanks continued: âThis is not a movie that falls into some sort of trend. I think it is going to be a test of the broader national audience, because it has none of the things that major studios want. Pre-Awareness is a big thing they want, which is why a lot of remakes are going on. (La La) is not a sequel, nobody knows who the characters areâŚBut if the audience doesnât go and embrace something as wonderful as this then we are all doomed.â
Sam and I finally got a chance to watch it yesterday night and we both absolutely loved it. Sure, there was a lot of hype surrounding it, it did break the all time record for most Golden Globes won for a movie (it took home seven). This included one each for the two leads, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The story was sweet, the dancing and singing were mesmerizing, and the the surreal scenes were absolutely breathtaking. Today I had to make sure that Ryan Gosling did actually play the piano during all of his scenes (he did!) and that Emma Stone did actually sing (she did!!). Of course, this made the movie all the more amazing.
Writer and director Damien Chazelle, who’s only 32, deserves tons of praise for creating a movie this enchanting. I particularly loved the way it was shot, the way they used different color lighting and how they showcased all these distinct scenes of Los Angeles.
This is definitely one of, if not the best, movie of the year!
