Celebrating May Birthdays and Mother’s Day

With all the children now, we find it’s much easier to celebrate special occasions like Mother’s Day or birthdays at home rather than at a restaurant. Not only do we avoid all that chaos that comes with squirmy children, we get to spend a lot more quality time together. This past weekend, Sam’s brother (Danny) and his family (his wife, Arlene, and their children, Quincy and Koda) came down from LA and we all met up at my in-law’s house.

Here are some pictures from the weekend. The photo above was taken at a nearby playground. I love how my niece, Quincy, is holding hands with both her dad and granddad.

Remember the picture pillows we bought for my mother-in-law? Here’s how she displayed them.

5-14-IMG_0014

The grandparents bought Parker a brand new remote control car. I was surprised by how well he could drive it.

5-14-IMG_0021

Sammy watching Parker playing with his remote control car.

5-14-IMG_0036

I’m glad I was able to take this picture of Sammy’s mom and grandmother together. His grandmother is an incredible 94-years-old!

5-14-IMG_0037

Koda is the youngest kid in the clan. He’s so adorable, isn’t he?

5-14-IMG_0040

Quincy let me take this picture of her smiling.

We bring bikes and toy cars to my in-law’s house because their house has large areas to play around.

5-14-IMG_0055

Parker rode his toy tractor around the backyard.

Logan is obsessed with riding in the golf cart.

5-14-IMG_0070

I don’t have many shots of Logan alone, so I was happy that I was able to take this one.

5-14-IMG_0073

Quincy enjoyed sweeping the driveway.

5-14-IMG_0081

Quincy and her grandpa let me take this picture of the two of them.

Logan will forever be my baby. He looks so small here, I love it.

Life Unfolding: Top 10 Moments of the Week

It’s been a fun week. No sick kids…yay! We actually headed out to the beach for a sunset dinner (with kids in tow of course), we enjoyed a nice breakfast at one of our favorite French cafes (not bougie), and the boys played a lot outside. The weather has been great in So Cal. Here are my family’s top 10 moments of the week.

Above: The kids let me capture this picture of them lying next to each other. When they’re calm, they’re so cute. (Mothers, you know what I mean.)

LW8hS

On one random day this week, Sam and I enjoyed a nice, quiet breakfast without the boys. We hit up a French cafe, called Vallee d’Brume, that primarily serves desserts. Through Yelp we found out that they also have some killer breakfasts. Sam went a little rogue and ordered this meat and cheese plate. It was just as good as it looks.

En1GS

These are some few outtakes from our beach trip. Sam doesn’t let me capture many pictures of him. I like the colors and background in this shot.

Sammy watching Logan throw rocks at the beach. I like how relaxed we felt there. The kids did their own thing and we just hung out and watched them.

This is a rare picture of Logan. The guy never sits still. I like how he’s not smiling. Man, he loves playing amongst the rocks.

jivOz

What would a beach photo series be without the classic “feet in the sand” picture?

32nyu

That’s Parker screeching down the driveway in his tricycle. He’s outgrown it but still likes to ride it fast.

8q9HX

Logan and Sam sharing a sweet moment. It’s amazing how much Logan loves his daddy. He runs up to him every day we get home from work and it’s all “Appa, Appa, Appa”! (Which means daddy in Korean.)

qMcg1

I like this picture because it looks like Logan is meditating. Of course, it’s on the driveway but, hey, I can’t seem to sit still for more than five minutes anywhere.

Finally, here’s Logan and Parker in their pjs. They’re getting ready for bed. I tried to get a shot of them for grandma, who bought them their pjs, but ended up getting this. It’s so perfectly captures their personalities.

Next week, I think I’m going to try and capture more photos of what inspires me. I’ll still be taking pictures of Parker and Logan, but I’m going to change it up a bit to keep things fresh.

How We Celebrated Mother’s Day

This year, my sister, Grace, pulled out all the stops for Mother’s Day. She picked up delectable desserts at Bottega Louie, fresh strawberries at Tanaka Farms, beautiful pink peonies at Trader Joes and then hit up multiple markets to create a whole, handmade feast. On the menu was fried chicken, salmon, three salads, a breakfast quiche and more. Best of all, I got to celebrate Mother’s Day with my two best friends, my sisters Grace and Carol, along with Grace’s good friend Anne and her daughter. After our early dinner, the kids had a blast playing outside. Here are some pictures from yesterday’s festivities.

My oldest nephew, Evan, is trying out an electric scooter. (Secretly, I want one, too.)

book6IMG_9769mom

Parker was eager to try out his cousin, Bobby’s, skateboard. One day, I’ll learn to ride one, too! (It’s on my bucket list.)

book6IMG_9748mom

The older boys played hockey on the street.

book6IMG_9791mom

The kids used blankets and stuffed animals to build a fort. It was quite impressive. Logan had a fun time playing in it.

Peek-a-boo Logan, I see you!

Life Unfolding: Top 10 Moments of the Week

Hope you had a good week! Parker developed a stomach bug so we’ve all been having some rough nights of sleep. We even had to go to the ER one early morning. I’m hoping it’s just growing pains or something temporary, we’re getting a bunch of tests done right now. It all has me worried but the kid is overall healthy and resilient so I think he’ll get through it.

Now let’s dive into this past week’s most interesting moments.

Above: The ice cream truck made a stop in our neighborhood and the kids rushed to grab their favorite treats. Our kind neighbor paid for all the kids’ ice creams. Love my neighborhood.

book6IMG_93995-6

Logan is obsessed with his dad. I call him “elusive” because he won’t give affection to just anyone. Here he is giving Sammy a rare kiss.

book6IMG_94145-6

Last Friday, we hung out at my in-laws house. The boys love playing in their big backyard. Here’s Logan picking up all the crunchy leaves.

book6IMG_94305-6

Here’s grandpa watching Logan wander.

book6IMG_94995-6

It was my nephew, Riverton’s, birthday this past week so we had a small family celebration at my sister’s house. The boy loves everything Thomas.

book6IMG_95115-6

Here’s my older sister, Grace, at Riverton’s birthday party cleaning the grill…with style.

book6IMG_96445-6

Parker loves playing hide-and-go-seek with the neighborhood kids. He’s usually the one that has to find the girls.

book6IMG_96495-6

I captured this headless shot of the girls and Parker around the neighborhood. I don’t like taking pictures of other people’s kids unless they give me explicit rights.

book6IMG_60075-6

Sam and I went to a new-ish restaurant in Old Town Temecula called The Goat & Vine. They served this beautiful and delicious salad. Loved the ambiance, too. Highly recommend.

book6IMG_60145-6

Finally, here’s Parker in pain. Poor kid had to get multiple tests done this week to find out just what’s going on in his stomach. I pray he gets better soon.

What are your plans for the upcoming weekend? We have a small Mother’s Day celebration going on at my sister’s house on Sunday. How are you celebrating Mother’s Day?

Note: Due to all the doctor appointments, I won’t be able to put up Fun Links of the Week today. I’ll resume next Friday.

Life Unfolding: Top 12 Moments of the Week

This week, I thought I’d show you some pictures of the boys as well as some art that’s hanging inside my home. I’m always looking for the next print to add to my collection. One day, I dream of collecting originals but for now I’ll settle on limited edition or open edition prints.

Above: One of our neighbors is growing this shrub, called crimson bottlebrush, in their front yard. The flowers are red and arranged in spikes on the ends of branches. I love their vibrant color.

book6IMG_9238week

Strangely, this week, Logan didn’t want to go on walks. Instead, he was crying by the car because he wanted to climb inside of it to watch Toy Story. (Now that guy loves Pixar movies…wonder where he gets that from.)

book6IMG_9251week

On one of the days this week, the sky was this beautiful pale blue color. Not a cloud in the sky. #nolightroom

book6IMG_9254week

Mommy and Parker’s Nikes. Yes, we’re that brand loyal.

book6IMG_9278week

I like this picture because it looks like Parker is levitating over our living room couch.

book6IMG_9306week-2

Earlier this week, Sam was in Vegas for a conference. He brought home these presents for the kids. Minion fans with candy inside.

book6IMG_9324week

Charlie trying to give us his most regal look.

book6IMG_9327week

One of our neighborhood kids came by on her scooter wearing hot pink pants and these cool light up shoes. (File this under, “Where were these shoes when I was a kid?”)

book6IMG_9366week

In the mail this week, I received this print called Blue Morpho, Double Helix by Rafael Araujo. Now I need to find a place for it inside my home.

book6IMG_9372week

Yesterday, Sammy gave Logan a much needed haircut. Can you believe that Sam learned how to cut hair on YouTube?

book6IMG_9384week

These are the four prints hanging inside my home office. Clockwise from top they’re from Audrey Kawasaki, Amy Sol, and then there’s two from Stella Im Hultberg.

book6IMG_9387week

Inside our house, hanging right by the doorway, is this piece from an old college friend Pei-San Ng. Called Matches: Passion, it’s made from approximately 2,500 matches. I “love” it!

My Nephew’s Panda-Themed Birthday Party

Last week, the boys were sick so we had to stay home for the majority of the weekend but we managed to make it out to a Sunday dinner at my sister’s place for my nephew, Evan’s, birthday party. (We missed out in staying at Great Wolf Lodge, which was the first part of the celebration, and attending my friend daughter’s first birthday. Total bummer. From what my sisters said, Great Wolf Lodge was especially designed for kids, particularly those from five to 12.)

The cousins love seeing each other. In fact, they see each other so often that they’ve developed strong bonds with one other. The older kids are so gentle and sweet with the younger ones, it warms my heart!

I remember the day when Evan was born like it was yesterday. My sister Grace and I put our ears to the door (only the mother-in-law and father were allowed in) and when we heard Evan’s first cry we burst into tears, overwhelmed with emotion. (I think we even hugged!) Since Evan is the first of all the kids, he holds a special place in my heart. “Auntie Alice” found such pure love for her sister’s son it even shocked her. (Yes, I am writing in the third person.)

I can’t say enough about how much I love that kid. Once, when I tore one of my leg muscles skiing, he asked me what happened and then a month later followed up, inquiring about it again. The crazy thing is that he was probably only five or so at the time! What compassion, I thought.

In any case, here are some of the pictures from the party.

It was a panda-themed birthday party, since Evan loves pandas.

Riverton and Logan enjoying their pre-meal popsicles.

IMG_9162bday

The feast! For his birthday dinner, my sister, Carol, and her husband, Burt, cooked up all of Evan’s favorite foods.

IMG_9168bday

Burt made all the steaks. They were cooked to perfection! He uses the sous-vide method. (Highly recommend this.)

Evan looking contemplative while Riverton watches his brother from the side.

IMG_9166bday

Parker wearing his hat and enjoying the meal. We all ate outside.

Happy Birthday, Evan! We love you.

Quote About Shining

This quote was so perfectly funny that I had to put it up. “It’s okay to be a glowstick. Sometimes we have to break before we shine.” Well said.

We’ve all gone through a lot of tough sh** in our lives, haven’t we? One day I’ll go into more detail about all the craziness I’ve been through, but for now, I’ll just put up this quote and say, “Shine on!”

Life Unfolding: Top 10 Moments of the Week

It’s been an especially rough week, with Logan being sick and all. We made it out to see my sister and went on a hike, but mostly we stayed in. We had big plans for the upcoming weekend but with the little one being sick, we’ve had to scrap them all. When the kids get sick it seems like time just stands still, doesn’t it? I can’t wait till everyone’s in tip top shape.

That being said, here are the top 10 moments of the week.

Above: Logan’s been extra curious these days. Here he is on one of our walks where he stopped to smell some roses.

IMG_8886april22

Parker was super psyched to see all the presents the grandparents bought for last weekend’s festivities. Unfortunately, we didn’t end up hanging out with my in-laws because Logan was starting to show signs of sickness.

IMG_8927april22

Sammy brought out a ladder to change out a lightbulb and the boys went crazy over wanting to climb it.

IMG_8951april22

Parker and Logan have found a new interest in riding their toy cars, Parker tipped his tractor and laughed about it.

IMG_8955april22

My nephew, Riverton, had been sick all week, too. You can just see the pain in his eyes.

IMG_8965april22

That’s Riverton and Logan checking out the pool we blew up for them. The boys are going to grow up being best buds.

IMG_9046april22

We went hiking to Santa Rosa Plateau, and on our way up, Parker fell asleep. It’s so hard to wake a sleeping child.

IMG_9077april22

Remember the vernal pools that were teeming with life? The water has all dried up and now what’s left are brush and patches of purple wildflowers.

IMG_9095april22

Logan contemplating life over his dad’s left shoulder.

IMG_9097april22

The plateau never ceases to amaze me with all its beauty.

Life Unfolding: Top 10 Moments of the Week

Welcome to another edition of Life Unfolding: Top 10 Moments of the Week! For those unfamiliar with this series, it consists of compilation posts of special moments that happened during the week. Not only does this help me practice my photography, it also serves as a visual diary of what transpired. You’ll see a lot of Sam and our two boys in these pictures along with other family members that we visit often like my sisters Carol and Grace.

Above: That’s Logan running into Sammy’s arms. That boy is in love with his daddy.

IMG_8494boy

Last weekend it rained in OC. I captured this shot of my nephew, Riverton, riding his toy motorcycle despite the rain. This kid is hardcore.

IMG_8650boy

My mother and father-in-law have these beautiful rose bushes growing in their front yard.

IMG_8666boy

This week, grandpa bought Logan his own scooter and helmet. Doesn’t he look like a reluctant superhero?

IMG_8675boy

The kids love riding around in their grandparents’ golf cart.

IMG_8733boy

On one of our hikes this week, Parker held his father’s hand as he looked up into the sky. A plane was passing by. I was able to capture catchlight, a light source that causes a specular highlight in a person’s eye.

IMG_8775boy

Our nanny, Cindy, loves going on our hikes with us to Santa Rosa Plateau. I love her relaxed pose, she’s not rushing, it’s like she’s taking in the scenery.

IMG_8789boy-2

That’s Cindy again strolling along. I love showing negative space, especially with the sky.

IMG_8811boy

One of our neighbors has a yard full of these animal sculptures. This satiated raccoon one is my favorite.

IMG_8836boy

I caught this picture of Parker yesterday. During our evening walks, there’s always a point where he gets unbelievably tired. He can go from 100 to zero in two seconds. Ah, the toddler life.
