Beautifully Striking Paintings of People by Dario Moschetta

Using acrylic on canvas, Dario Moschetta, an artist from a small town near Treviso, Italy, creates incredibly striking portraits of people. Though he experiments in various techniques, especially for his Cityscapes series, it’s his gorgeous paintings of faces that caused me to stop and stare. The way he captures emotion in his portraits is striking. I love how some of his subjects seem lost in a dream, with their eyes closed, they’re immersed in their own peaceful world.

Fun Links of the Week

With all of the violence happening in the US right now, it doesn’t feel right to share “fun” links. Then again, maybe it’s what we need the most. Maybe we need our weekly dose of art and design to remind us of that there are things that can unite us, things that can bring a smile to our faces, and things that can lift our heavy hearts.

Let’s start off, however, with this:

In the wake of the police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, Daily Show host Trevor Noah had one point to make on Thursday: It’s possible to be both pro-cop and pro-black. A must watch video.

Would you collect street art?

I love this colorful makeover of a decaying building on a beach.

Care to live in a co-living development?

It’s coming…lots of naked people in the name of art. I’m looking forward to seeing Spencer Tunick’s newest work.

Love Pixar? Seen all of their movies? Then check out this sweet compilation. via TheAwesomer

This pink pavilion reminds me of Hubba Bubba gum.

Long exposures + fireflies = magic.

As a Disney fan, I got a kick out of these paintings.

Tim Burton’s Game of Thrones.

Walking on water? At the Trevi Fountain? Fendi pulled out all the stops in Rome.

DIY rainbow tie dye hammock.

I wish I could go to Seattle to see this.

I’m going to try to make it out to Long Beach to check out this art show. (Excited to see a piece by Ernest Zacharevic in person.)

Threadless just started selling four different styles of hats. (I wish beanies looked good on me. If so, I’d get this one.)

Beautiful Frida Kahlo Street Art in Buenos Aires

Since artist Frida Kahlo’s birthday was yesterday, July 6, I thought we could celebrate by looking at this magnificent piece of street art by artists Julián Campos Segovia, Jean Paul Jesses and Juan Carlos Campos. It took the threesome three weeks to paint the mural using paintbrushes and latex paint. The iconic Mexican painter holds a cigarette in her hand and is adorned with flowers in her hair. The head of Frida is made from a wooden panel which was attached to a wall.

The breathtaking artwork measures 9 meters high and 7 meters wide. It was completed in Palermo, Buenos Aires.

Sunlight Through Poppy Petals

Have you ever looked at a picture of flowers and it instantly brightened up your day? That’s what this photo did to me. It was taken by Flora Forager, a self-proclaimed “botanical artist, painter, writer, nature lover, [and] light seeker.” Using flower petals, leaves, and other natural materials she finds in her garden or in urban areas, Flora Forager creates dreamy scenes.

She’s based in Seattle but she’s been vacationing in Venice. You can follow her on Instagram, here.

Below are a few more of her poppy pictures.

You can buy one of Flora’s prints over on her website. (Isn’t chamomile tea the cutest?) She also has a journal you can pick up over on Amazon.

Paper Cut Typography of Alice in Wonderland Quote

I love dreamy prints like this. Mr. Yen (aka Jonathan Chapman) created this beautiful paper cut typography print by hand. The quote is from Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. It states, “Sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Here’s the context: “Alice laughed: “There’s no use trying,” she said; “one can’t believe impossible things.”
“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Mr. Yen is a Leeds, UK-based paper cut artist and designer who graduated from Leeds College of Art in 2010 with a BA in Graphic Design. Since then, he’s worked with such companies and clients as Oprah magazine, House & Garden magazine, Computer Arts magazine and Unilever/LYNX. He can be found on Society6 and Etsy. (I wish I could buy this print but Mr. Yen is taking a break.)

Fun Links of the Week

What are you up to this long weekend? Sam and I want to take the kids out of town and into nature. (Have you read this article on how nature can make you kinder, happier and more creative?) We still haven’t officially decided on where but we’ll probably end up in either Julian, Idyllwild, or Big Bear. (For my photo a day project, since I won’t be near a computer on the weekends, you can keep up with me on Instagram.)

Now, let’s get down to business. Here are some fun links of the week.

It’s going to be in the 90’s so we’ll probably be either inside or poolside, lying around in some shade. Have a fantastic weekend!

Ultra-Realistic Embroidered Pet Portraits by Emillie Ferris

How wonderful would it be to have a custom pet portrait of your dog in this embroidered style? Embroidery is a time-consuming art form, so, artist Emillie Ferris, only creates and sells five of them every one or two months. It takes two to six weeks to complete one piece, which translates to each hoop taking between 13 to 18 hours. The price for such a personal piece of art isn’t cheap, each portrait costs £248 plus shipping.

As Ferris states on her website, “Each hoop is made by yours truly, and although I wish I could give every single one of you a custom slot at once (and grow 10 more hands, hehe), I’m afraid there is only so much work I can take on. Please do not be disappointed if you miss out on a slot, as I aim to release spaces as regularly as I can.”

I wish I could have two of these, one for each of my Cavalier King Charles, Fozzie and Charlie. They look ultra-realistic, don’t they? It’s nice to read some of her client’s feedback. As one states, “I wanted to gush some more, because it’s mesmerizing. I love how wavy it is around his cheeks, and I love how the white is like spilling up his forehead. I love how you got the details in his irises and how there’s a shine in the pupils. And I love the patterns in his fur and how they make you want to pet his face. I’ve really never seen work like this and I’m extremely grateful to have one of my best friend. Hank is my once-in-a-lifetime dog and I’m just so happy that I’ll always have this.”

Your feedback makes every hour worth it ?I was nearly in tears when I received this message from a customer in America about this custom pet portrait of Hank: "I wanted to gush some more, because it’s mesmerizing.
