Fun Links of the Week

Tomorrow’s the big day! It’s the annual Halloween party held at my sister, Carol’s, house. My family is dressing up as rock stars. I’ll be going as Katy Perry, Sam will be Boy George, Parker is going as Michael Jackson and little Logan will be Axl Rose. Can’t wait to see what the rest of the family will be dressed up as.

Now, here are some fun links of the week.

In this house, love how the inside flows with the outside.

Pictures to make you appreciate autumn.

Poketo, a fun little store, is getting another location!

There should be a ban on these Halloween costumes.

Beautiful Watercolor Paintings of Whales by Rachel Byler

If you love watercolor and you can’t get enough of whales, you’ll want to check out these fine art prints by Rachel Byler. The Pennsylvania-based artists creates lovely paintings of whales playing just under the surface of the water.

Byler states why she loves to work with watercolor on her website, “Although I love all types of art, I am particularly drawn to watercolor because of the versatility that it allows as far as being able to pick up and paint wherever. I love having to work with the flow of the water. The most beautiful washes and blooms come about when you give more control to the movement of the water.”

Love the unfinished look of the dripping paint.

A River of 10,000 Books Flows Through the Streets of Downtown Toronto

For the Nuit Blanche Toronto festival, held on October 1, Spanish designers Luzinterruptus brought back one of their most popular installations, Literature vs. Traffic. Previously carried out in Madrid, New York and in Melbourne, this installation consisted of 10,000 books donated by the Salvation Army. 50 volunteers worked for 12 days to create a huge river flowing through the downtown streets of Toronto.

The message? “We want literature to take over the streets and conquer public spaces, freely offering those passersby a traffic-free place which, for some hours, will succumb to the humble power of the written word. Thus, a city area which is typically reserved for speed, pollution and noise, will become, for one night, a place for quietness, calm and coexistance illuminated by the vague, soft light coming out of the lighted pages. The books will be there for those who want to take them so the installation will recycle itself and will last as long as users want it there. Cars will eventually fill their space but for many of those who walked by this place that night, the memory of those books that took that same space will improve their relationship with these surroundings”.

During that night, visitors could literally feel immersed in a flow of words as they dove down and found their treasures, enjoying brief reading moments which eventually would lead them to taking small pieces of the installation home.

Hilarious Halloween Outfits for Dogs

I love a good Halloween costume and it’s even better when a dog is involved. Here are some recent pictures of dogs dressed up for Halloween events. The Donald Trump one kills me! And the nun and Pope one is so creative.

Fun Links of the Week

Hello! What are you up to this weekend? If you don’t have any plans, support local artisans, crafters and makers by checking out Artisnal LA. I’m headed to a Fall Festival my husband, Sam, will be a part of. There’s going to be carnival games, face painting and bouncers. Basically, a kid’s paradise.

Now, here are this week’s fun links of the week.

How did I miss this? One of my favorite photographers, Max Wanger, sat down with the Jealous Curator for a podcast. The man is self-taught! (Gives me hope.)

If you’re looking for a mid-life career, this is an inspiring read.

I love it when everyday objects are given an extraordinary makeover. (See Kickstarter.)

The 10 Principles of a Purposeful Home. I liked this, “First and foremost, focus on simplicity and usability.”

I’m debating on whether or not I should pick up this coffee table book. Love reading the stories behind pictures.

Looking for some Halloween foods you can bring to a party? (I like the chocolate dipped ghost strawberries.)

Can’t wait to see works from the Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo new show at Spoke. (Starts November 3.)

Designer Emily Henderson’s post about her baby girl turning one is so sweet.

How cute is this Charlie Brown and Snoopy halloween stencil?

I’d love to work here. (I really look up to Tina Roth-Eisenberg.)

I like photo series that give you a different perspective. (The flowers!)

Just bought this dress, I think I’m going to live in it this fall.

Colorful Shadows Reveal Child’s Superhero Within

Do you remember the series Super Shadows? It’s the fun posters where artist Jason Ratliff showed us the superheroes within every child. He’s back with the second installment in the series and this time he shows us that children of all races, genders and abilities can be a superhero. Jason wanted to bring children hope, empowerment, and the idea that the impossible is possible through this very special series. (I just love that!)

As he states, “First, the release of my second installment of Super Shadows. The response from my first set was overwhelming. The letters I received not only showed me how much people connected with my work, but also showed me how the series could improve. People identify with these characters on a very personal level and I wanted to expand the series in a way that would make it more inclusive. Hopefully, with this new set, I was able to do a little of that.”

For the first 48 hours of the series release, 50% of all sale proceeds will benefit Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. “I was extremely touched when they wanted to decorate their urgent care office with my first Super Shadow series,” he said, “so I’m very happy to partner with Curioos.com to offer a little support in return.”

New Refreshingly Honest Notebooks by Emily McDowell

You can always count on Emily McDowelll to deliver honest messages on everything she touches, whether that’d be on her greeting cards, her journals, her mugs, her tote bags or her enamel pins. There are six new journals (five are featured here). On the covers you’ll find meaningful messages that will remind you to live an authentic life. My favorite is the first one: Notes for My Future Therapist. The journals contain 125 lined pages, with screen printed chipboard covers, gold foil on the front, and painted page edges.

Recently, Emily came out with enamel pins, too. They’re little badges of things that you’ve conquered in everyday life. (Hence the name Everyday Bravery Pins.) You’ll find pins like Put Myself First, Didn’t Please Everyone, and Survived Indescribable Grief. Why not celebrate the big and small things you’ve accomplished throughout your life?
